Elagabalus was born Varius Avitus Bassianus in 203 or 204 AD in Emesa, Syria, ascended to the throne on 16 May 218 AD and ruled until his death on 11 March 222 AD. He was a member of the Severan dynasty, the son of Sextus Varius Marcellus and Julia Soaemias, and the grandson of Julia Maesa, who played a key role in his rise to power. His reign is noted for its religious innovations, particularly his promotion of the Syrian sun god El-Gabal, which he attempted to elevate above traditional Roman deities
In 220 AD, Elagabalus made headlines for his controversial religious and social actions, including the symbolic marriage of the god El-Gabal to the moon goddess Urania and his marriage to the Vestal Virgin Julia Aquilia Severa, which provoked public outrage. His rule was marked by political instability, extravagant behavior, and tension with the Roman Senate, reflecting the broader challenges of the Severan dynasty during the early 3rd century. 
Elagabalus’ reign occurred during a period of increasing instability in the Roman Empire, preceding the Crisis of the Third Century, which saw frequent changes of emperors and military conflicts across the empire. Despite his short and controversial rule, Elagabalus remains a notable figure in Roman history for his religious reforms and the dramatic events of his court.
